I love doing hair extensions! They can add length, volume or both and look amazing on almost every texture of hair. Although not new to the beauty industry and Hollywood starlets, new techniques and types of extensions have made them more available and affordable. As a result, more and more salons are offering hair extension services. But a small word of caution, make sure that the salon you choose has experience and uses the best quality products. When it comes to hair extensions, don't go cheap, because you'll look cheap.

Were I work at Java Hair Salon in South Daytona, Florida, I use strand on strand keratin bond extensions. They are 100% remy human hair, remy being the finest quality human hair available. The color is custom blended to match and the strand are attached individually. The keratin bond is easily and gently applied without compromising the integrity of the hair and because it is human hair, it can be colored, permed, flat ironed, or curled.

Hair extensions can enhance any hair style. I've had several clients that have come in after visiting other salons and getting an unfortunate haircut. I've placed extensions only where they've need filling in or lengthening. It sure beats waiting for it to grow out!

Bottom line, extensions are fabulous! I highly recommend them. I wore them myself for awhile, waiting for my own hair to grow out, I loved them!!

Formaldehyde Free Smoothouts?????

For a few years now the big buzz has been keratin straighteners claiming to be formaldehyde free. But the reality is, keratin doesn't straighten your hair, formaldehyde does. Keratin is a protein that is the chief constituent of hair and simply restructures the cuticle as a conditioner but does not straighten it, and formaldehyde is a highly toxic chemical that has hair straightening properties. Plain and simple. Do not be fooled.

Most companies claiming keratin based, formaldehyde free products have been getting away with hiding said formaldehyde under other names on the label such as formalin, methanol, and other aldehyde derivatives, until now. Now the FDA is cracking down on such claims and making sure the heath and well being of the client and the technician is being considered.

Why Sulfate Free Shampoo, Body Wash, etc.?

Sulfates with acronyms known as SLS, SLES, and ALS are detergents that primaily make shampoos, body washes, and cleansers clean and lather. But Sulfates are also harsh and strip your hair and body of natural oils and harm the integrity of your hair color, making your hair dry and your color faded.

This may cause you to over use conditioner to combat the problem, leaving your hair looking and feeling limp.

My Recommendations

In the salon we use and primarily sell Morrocan Oil and Paul Mitchell products. Over the years I've found these to be the best and have seen the most improvement in my clients hair and hair color. The most current addition to the Paul Mitchell line is the Awaphi Wild Ginger series. Happy New Year Everyone!

New Year is about change. We all know that, so what are you waiting for? Make a resolution not to get stuck! We all have that relative or friend that gets stuck in a style and never gets out, like a mirror maze. Don't be that person!

Take a Style Risk!

Not committed to bangs? Go to the beauty supply and by some! Yes they have clip-on bangs! They also have clip-on extensions , but only to try(don't wear all the time yuck!). But it's a great way to see if you like them! I highly suggest that if you do like them, get them professionally applied with a quality human hair and keratin protein bond. We use FN Longlocks at our salon. we customize the extensions to match your color perfectly and because of the keratin protein, which is what hair is composed of, they pose no harm to your own hair. We also have fashion colors, (colors not found in nature) that are so much fun when just a few pieces are added here and there. But, PS, they also have clip-on fashion colors at the beauty supply.

Not Committed to Color?

Ask your stylist to select a demi or semi permanent hair color customized just for you! It will only last a few weeks and you can decide if you like it. (Don't try to do it yourself, ask a professional, you'll thank yourself later, I promise.) Or maybe do some highlights or lowlights, or both! It's just hair color and no matter what anyone says it's totally temporary. Hair color can be be changed if you don't like it. Don't be afraid to make a new start, we all have to a one point or another.

Change is Good for the Soul!

It's important not to be complacent, especially with your looks. Let's be honest, we live in a superficial society. That's a fact. So go with it. You want that promotion, boyfriend, girlfriend, job, whatever? You need to be relevant! It's harsh but true. Get in the game friends! Make a change!

Someone once said that life is too short because we wait so long to begin it. I believe that to be true. I'm a cancer survivor and all I want to do is live, you should too.

Youthful Looking Hair

The quest for youth is not limited to facial and body treatments, but has now expanded to keeping aging hair shiny and youthful.

Is My Hair Thinning?

That's a question I hear from my clients constantly. The answer may be yes. As we age like with our skin, we lose elasticity, moisture, and our hair texture changes. In addition, stress, traumas like surgery or accidents can cause our hair to shed, a lot. From my experience with my clients, trauma and stress shedding will subside and your hair will eventually fill in. But thinning from aging is something I have seen increase in the past years. Possibly from environmental issues, internal problems or genetics, but most likely, in my opinion, from chemical abuse that has not properly been addressed.

Anti-Aging Hair Products

A term usually related to skin care treatments, anti-aging hair care products are now everywhere. What professional hair stylist have know for years, products lines are now catching up to, and that's making all hair beautiful, no matter what the age of it, with anti-aging moisture and vitamins.

But most women, while spending hundreds of dollars on skin and body treatments, neglect the one fashion accessory that completely defines them, Their Hair!!

What I Recommend to my Clients

On every single head of hair that I do, I use Morrocan Oil. The originator of Argan Oil in hair products, Morrocan Oil is rich in vitamins F and A to fortify hair and improve elasticity, Vitamin C to protect against free radicals and phenols to shield against environmental stress. Morrocan Oil also is an anti-oxidant and has a UV protector to prevent color fading and sun damage.

If you cannot afford Morrocan Oil, you can find a form of Argan Oil at Sally's Beauty Supplies around the country or online. I highly recommend the original version however.

Take My Advice

Listen, if your hair looks old, so do you! Do something for yourself and your hair, talk to your stylist if you have one and if you don't , get some Morrocan or Argan Oil. No need to over use this product, a little goes a long way.

Directions:

Shampoo, Condition (always), towel dry, then use a small amount of the Oil and work through your hair stating at the ends, then style as usual.

BTW Morrocan Oil also has a fabulous Shampoo and Conditioner!

There are other more gentle AHA and BHA acid treatments, but in my experience Glycolic is the most effective for visible results. I do not recommend over doing it, however, as it can also over dry your skin if improperly used.
